This week we have been looking at the guidance for opening churches. It’s complex, has been slow to emerge and is still not entirely clear, but one thing is certain – it will require some significant adaptions to the way we conduct services in church. Those adaptions and other steps that we need to take will unfortunately take time. During July, we will therefore continue to focus on our online services, but review the situation again before deciding about August and thereafter. In the meantime, our PCCs will continue planning how to manage things when the churches do reopen.
Sometimes it feels like lockdown is nearly over, but the NHS guidance remains that those in the vulnerable category should only go out for limited purposes. Events in Leicester and elsewhere show that we all need to be careful and look after each other. Yes, we will go back to church, but only when we can safely manage the risks.
St Thomas who we remember today comes across in the gospel stories as someone of great compassion and care as well as someone who understood risks. It’s a great example to bear in mind. In the meantime, if you have thoughts about how we can improve our care across our villages or improve our worship, please do let us know – we’d love to hear from you.
Keep us, good Lord, under the shadow of your mercy in this time of uncertainty and distress. Sustain and support the anxious and fearful, and lift up all who are brought low; that we may rejoice in your comfort knowing that nothing can separate us from your love in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.
